Windsor Castle In 1070 William the Conqueror chose Windsor as a base to guard London from the west. Since then it has been a continuous home to the royal family. Over the years many of the royal residents have made their own mark on the castle and this has made it a spectacular building with many additions and special features. Windsor Castle is also home to a large collection of paintings by well know artists such as Holbein and Rubens. The present Queen and her family still use the Castle, many at weekends.
