Whitechapel Art Gallery
The Whitechapel Art Gallery is based in the East End of London, it has an international reputation for its provocative exhibitions of modern art. The gallery was founded in 1901 by the social reformer and missionary, Canon Samuel Augustus Barnett. He began it by mounting exhibitions of paintings that were very popular with the local East Enders. The Whitechapel Open is a unique exhibition held each year, that shows off works from some of the estimated 10,000 or so artists who live in the area.
