Shezan
16 - 22 Cheval Place
Knightsbridge
London
SW7 1ES
Having opened its Knightsbridge doors 40 years ago, Shezan remains the only Indian restaurant in the UK to receive a star rating from Egon Ronay, The Gold Plate Award, and win Restaurant of the Year. Impressive, wouldn't you say? It's physically arresting too. Diners descend into an ornate cocktail bar filled with an atmospheric array of native objects and trinkets. Then there's the elegant 80-seat main restaurant, off which extends an equally lightly-lit private dining room. The Karachi-born head chef's focus is on traditional Punjabi style food - prepared strictly with halal meat - although there are sophisticated offerings from diverse regions. Give them 24 hours notice, and they'll prepare bara - a whole lamb marinated and stuffed with basmati rice exotic spices cooked in the North Western Frontier province style. If you like live music with your meal, go on a Friday or Saturday. But whatever the day or night, you can bet your bottom rupee you'll find yourself in an unhurried atmosphere.
