Sarkhel's

The chef at Sarkhel's has cooked his family-style Indian cuisine for everyone from Indian grand hotel guests to the Price of Wales to the punters at the Bombay Brasserie, and has established this family-run restaurant as a culinary shining light of the area. Set into the ground floor of part of a terrace of houses, the decor is smart casual and the ambience bright and bubbly. Families are welcome but you are just as likely to see local business folk or dating couples. Starters include vegetarian dishes like chatpata chana, or crisp chickpeas with onions, coriander and tomatos with dressing, or non-veggie ones like murg ke chaap 'sixer' which are Andhra-style fiery chicken lollipops. Main courses feature extremely authentic and flavourful favourites like slowly simmered or flash-cooked curries and tandoories, while puds feature traditional Bengali rice pudding or the chef's special bhapa doi, a steamed yoghurt dish with caramelised palm jaggery from Bengal. Regular regional festivals are popular at Sarkhel's, and vegetarians are particularly well looked-after.
