Rose Theatre
The Rose was built in 1587 by Philip Henslowe and was the first theater on Bankside, with a repertory that included plays by Kyd, Jonson, Marlow and Shakespeare. Its remains were discovered in 1989, and are now preserved below an office complex, where visitors can 'stand where Shakespeare stood', over the remains of this genuine Elizabethan theatre. This is a temporary exhibition, intended to reawaken public interest in the theatre, and help generate funds for its re-excavation.
