Porters English Restaurant
17 Henrietta Street
Covent Garden
London
WC2E 8QH
Founded by the 7th Earl of Bradford, situated in the heart of Covent Garden, and serving the absolute stalwart dishes of traditional British cuisine, Porters is so English you'd expect the waiters to have bulldog tattoos. This is at the opposite end of the British dining tradition from Simpson's in the Strand - it's relaxed, lively, and child-friendly, with the emphasis on value for money. All the dishes are favourites here - that's the point. We particularly liked the starter of mini spicy fish cakes with a hint of chilli and ginger, as well as the white onion and cider soup. Mains include marvellous pies and grills, and great wild boar and sage sausage with horseradish mash. Sweets will take you back to the nursery. A blistering place, what ho.
