A London Guide / London Shopping / London Shopping Areas / Oxford Street

Oxford Street

With one of the highest concentrations of shops in the world Oxford Street is a very busy area of London. It receives some 200 million visitors per year and is home to many of Britain's leading stores, including Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Selfridges, Debenhams, D H Evans, BHS and the world famous HMV record store. The street was given its name for two reasons, one because it used to lead to Oxford, and two because the Earl of Oxford bought the open land to the north of it in 1793.
