National Gallery
Founded in 1824 when George IV persuaded a reluctant government to buy 38 major paintings, including works by Raphael and Rembrant, the National Gallery now houses one of the greatest collections of European painting in the world. Around 2,000 works are arranged chronologically in the gallery's four main wings: Sainsbury Wing: Paintings from 1260 to 1510, West Wing: Paintings from 1510 to 1600, North Wing: Paintings from 1600 to 1700 and East Wing: Paintings from 1700 to 1900.
