Maharani
77 Berwick Street
London
W1F 8TH
Maharani may not be anything special to look at, but it'll impress you with its diverse curries. If you're happy with your common or garden kormas and pasandas, this probably isn't the place for you. The chefs aren't afraid of using their imagination as bestsellers jalpari kabab (halibut fish rolls stuffed with king prawns, matured in creamed yoghurt with saffron and coriander) and paneer mirch masala (fresh cottage cheese tossed with lots of garlic, chillies, peppers, mint and onion) testify. The begam-e-samundar seabass literally melts in the mouth. The best seats in this cosy Indian restaurant are the two by the window which let you have a good nose at Soho as it passes by in all its, er, splendour. Regulars are mainly local business people. Oooh, but Colin Farrell ate here not to long ago. Bet you he doesn't know that Maharani means Queen in Hindi.
