A London Guide / London Shopping / London Deparment Stores / Liberty

Liberty

The present mock-tudor building that Liberty is housed in dates back to 1925, when it was built specifically for the store. The history of Liberty dates back further still though to 1875 when Arthur Lasenby Liberty opened his first shop that sold oriental silks. The prints and designs that Liberty went on to produce, by such artists as William Morris were to influence the Arts and crafts movement of the early 20th century. The store still maintains its links with the East, and the Arts and Crafts through its merchandise today.
