A new restaurant in Covent Garden can either be a mega-yawn collection of trite formulas, or a cause for true excitement. In this case, Le Deuxieme belongs in the latter category. Chef Geoffrey Adams is a dab hand at modern Euro cuisine, creating a changing Menu that recently included snails with tarragon cream and baby red chard served in wholemeal tartlet as a starter, and mains like pan-fried veal vilet with mozzarella, rosti potato and red pepper chutney. The touch is confident. But whoever designed the wine list a) clearly knows their stuff and b) loves French wine (along with wines from all other countries whose names begin with a capital letter). Le Deuxieme is one to savour.
