Island Restaurant & Bar
Lancaster Terrace
London
W2 2TY
Transforming Lancaster Gate into a culinary landmark is no mean feat, but one that Island has accomplished with quiet aplomb since opening mid-2004. Obviously with a lot of success as it received rave reviews in both Tatler and Harpers & Queen 2005 Restaurant Guides. Minimalist, the décor is a cool mix of grey, white and dark brown, but Hyde Park viewed through vast glass walls offers ample colour. Heading the kitchen is the dishy Leigh Diggins whose exciting British menu focuses on seasonal greats to create such triumphs as a lasagne of Cornish crab, south coast scallops, seasoned with tomato and ginger, and a scrumptious steamed chestnut pudding with a vanilla custard and chestnut ice cream. Even the cocktails proudly include British ingredients, and the wine list features bins from English vineyards. Never before has doing your bit for your country been so tasty.
