Hackney. Not the most salubrious area of London, but that hasn't hindered the masterminds behind Hackney Central - the place has clearly had the Loadsamoney wand wiggled at it, with impressive results. As the name implies, this is an ex-Victorian station conversion complete with exposed brickwork, crescent windows, high-ceilings and natural acoustics. A bar, club and a restaurant, you can pop in for breakfast at weekends, and lunch and dinner all week. The cooking style marries popular staples such as bangers and mash (the house burger is fast earning itself a fan-base) with less familiar foods such as plantain. Frankly, the lime green sofas are so comfy it's tempting to enjoy all three meals there - in one day. And then hot-foot it to the big bar upstairs for some wicked music.
