Guildhall Art Gallery
The original Guildhall Art Gallery was burned down during a severe air raid in May 1941. Her Majesty the Queen formally opened the new gallery on 2nd November 1999. Now pictures that were only available for public viewing at temporary exhibitions are once more on permanent display again. One of the many paintings on show at Guildhall, is Britain's largest independent oil painting, John Singleton Copley's The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar (Sept 1782).
