Courtauld Gallery
Home to some of the world's most famous Impressionist paintings the Courtauld Gallery collection was put together by the textile magnate Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947). His aim in giving the collection to the Institute that bears his name was to provide students of art history with outstanding examples that they could study. The collection is situated in the Strand Block of Somerset House, where the central courtyard is often used for open-air opera and other events.
