Carlyle's House Museum

Thomas Carlyle and his wife Jane Carlyle were both writers in the mid-19th century, and this tall townhouse in Cheyne Row is a tribute to their work. The house was built in 1708 as part of a terrace of London homes and they rented it for £35 a year. Here they lived, dined and entertained for almost 40 years, playing host to many of the major literary and cultural figures of the Victorian age, including Tennyson, Dickens, Ruskin and Darwin. If you visit this house you will get a real feel for the mid-Victorian era.
